Exclusive Performance: Mike Volpe of “Abbey Rhode”

On this week’s edition of “Cruisin’ Down Abbey Road”, I was joined in the studio by “South Jersey’s Favorite Son,” Mike Volpe. Mike was a founding member of the very first Beatles tribute band that toured the country back in the 1970′s. During the show, Mike presented some original live Abbey Rhode recordings from 1976 and played two songs live in-studio. After the show, Mike and I recorded a third live performance which I’m thrilled to present here as a joecookprogram.com exclusive! Here is Mike Volpe— along with myself on backing vocals— performing the Beatles classic, “Every Little Thing”.

Hey gang! Just got home from a great show and I thought I’d drop by the old blog and tell you all about it. Abbie and I had a great time at Gary Puckett’s concert at the Landis Theater earler this evening. Several of my fellow Cruisin’ 92.1 WVLT cohorts were there— including Dennis Burke, Pepper Paul, Ben Notaro, and Mayor Bob Romano— as well as a number of our listeners. The audience was packed and the crowd was in great spirits as Gary and the band took the stage around 7:10 pm. From beginning to end, it was an awesome show. The band was tight, the sound was great and Gary’s voice was as good today as it was in 1968!

Aside from his hits— all of which he played— some of the highlights included his solo rendition of Bob Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love”, a touching salute to all of the veterans in the audience, a nice tribute to the late Johnny Maestro, and a great story about the time he met/performed for Elvis Presley.

After the show, Abbie and I waited at the back of a long line to meet Gary. By the time we got up front to meet him, there were very few people left. We introduced ourselves and I thanked him for coming on the radio show with me earlier this month. We had a brief chat about the concert, the interview and Bob Dylan’s version “To Make You Feel My Love”.

After Gary autographed our ticket stub, my buddy Arthur Parenti (a loyal WVLT listener and one of the Veterans saluted during tonight’s show) took a picture of Abbie and I with him— then we returned the favor and took a picture of Arthur and Gary.

All in all, it was a great evening. Though Abbie and I had gone to a movie there once last year, this was our first concert at the recently renovated Landis Theater. It is a beautiful venue for a concert and I hope they keep brining great acts like this to Vineland. Hearing classic songs like Gary Puckett’s in a theater like the Landis really makes it feel like you’re stepping back in time for an evening. Well, that’s all for now. I’ll see you all Wednesday night @ midnight for Cruisin’ Down Abbey Road!

The Big Day!

Well, today is the big day! Tonight @ midnight we launch The Joe Cook Program on Cruisin’ 92.1 WVLT! This is something I’ve been looking forward to for some time and I think it’s going to be a lot of fun. We’ve got some cool things in the works and in the next few weeks, look for us to have some really interesting guests, as well as some great giveaways! In the future, there will also be contests exclusive to this website. Plus, feel free to give me a ring tonight, as I’ll be “playing what you’re saying” from 12-1 am. Also, if you’re not in the listening area of Cruisin’ 92.1 WVLT, you can also stream us online 24/7 at www.wvlt.com.
